Gascony is undoubtedly a land made up of villages.
Whether they are ‘sauvetés’ (around the church), ‘castelnaux’ (around the castle) or ‘bastides’ (fortified towns where trading takes place), Gascon villages have their own identity which gives them a certain charm.
DAY 1: Welcome to Gascony:
Late afternoon arrival. Welcome by our guide in a 2 ** hotel located in an old fortified town.
Welcome cocktail on arrival, dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 2: Fortified towns and small castles trail 120 km:
Fortified towns and small castles trail tour: BARRAN, this old fortified town built on an ancient religious village possesses a rare spiral steeple. ISLE DE NOE and MONTESQUIOU, old typical villages surrounding a castle. BASSOUES, old fortified town dominated by a 14th-century dungeon. Visit of the dungeon: exhibition on the first appearance of Gascon villages and their evolution. MARCIAC, old fortified town with a perfectly regular orthogonal plane. Marciac is now famous for its jazz festival. Lunch. Visit of the ‘Territoires du Jazz’ museum, a live area in which everyone with their infrared headset will be able to discover jazz through sound and images. Tour via PLAISANCE, old fortified town. Stop at a winegrower’s in the heart of the Madiran vineyard for a tasting. Dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 3: Villages of the Pays d'Armagnac 150 km:
Tour via VIC-FEZENSAC, village with a complex evolution (religious village plus small castle combined with the appearance of a fortified town with a vast main square that developed in between the two previous elements), famous for its ferias (bullfights) during Whitsun. Visit of LARVARDENS, old village surrounding and dominated by its imposing castle. Larressingle, a very beautiful example of a village surrounding a castle, old fortress of the bishops of CONDOM in the Middle Ages which Gascons nicely nicknamed the ‘little Carcassonne of the GERS’. Visit of this charming fortified village. Lunch.
LA ROMIEU, old village surrounding a church founded in the 9th century and modified in the 14th century. Visit of the village, the superb collegiate church and its cloister (14th century). Stop in FOURCES, picturesque circular fortified town. Visit of an Armagnac storehouse where the secrets of the oldest brandy in France, Armagnac, will be revealed to you. Dinner and overnight stay.
